Virtual Therapy Texas

Access Texas online counseling on a computer through a HIPPA-compliant link sent in the email appointment reminders.

Access counseling in the comfort of your home on your phone through the HIPPA-compliant free app “Telehealth by Simple Practice”

Quick Tip: Headphones are a great way to limit distractions and increase the feeling of privacy.

  • You will receive an email with an appointment reminder 24-48 hours before the appointment start time. Within that email, will be a link that will open a secure tab or new window. To begin the session, first, check your microphone and video are turned on, and then click “Join Meeting” to begin.

  • No commute time!! WOOHOO, No traffic!
Provided we are in a private environment with a strong internet connection. There is no difference in evidence-based treatment outcomes, although progress is not guaranteed.

  • Three main concerns present themselves through virtual mediums.
    1) Technology Issues

    • Poor wifi or data connection disrupting our timing or flow.

    • Batteries draining or phones overheating.

    • Power outages.

    2) Confidentiality

    • In my office, we have multiple forms of sound minimization. Speakers in our hallway play music, while white noise machines are placed on our ceiling. However, your home may not have the same privacy the office provides.

    • If you feel someone is listening to our conversations, we can discuss how to set boundaries for respect from that family member or friend.

    • Please be in a private room alone. You may feel comfortable with a friend being there for you, but that is inappropriate for our time.

    3) Safety

    • When we begin the session, we must first identify where we are. If there is any safety concerns I need your location to help.

  • Whichever has the strongest and most consistent internet connection will be better.
Telehealth by Simple Practice can overheat your phone over extended use and drain batteries quite quickly. If you have a computer, that likely will be more ideal.

  • Within reason. Perhaps we could spend some time talking about priorities and how important this time is. I also recognize sometimes we think better on a walk or building legos. My main rule of thumb is, we have to maintain privacy and if we can still have just as impactful of a session with the additional task, you do you. Often you will see me fidgeting with a pen, my ring, or a fidget toy.

  • Pressuring you to turn on your camera or remain in the camera's view can be counterproductive to our sessions. Provided you stay focused and can maintain a conversation, I will meet you where you are. However, without video, we are limited to only one kind of communication, verbal.

Non-verbal communication can share more than words with one facial expression. Therefore, being on the camera allows for a better connection and likely deeper processing.

  • No worries! Animals can provide comfort and increase sharing. However, if your pet is hyperactive or repeatedly disrupting the process, that is counterproductive, and I ask that we use our precious time wisely without distractions.

  • Previously during COVID many of the telehealth laws provide more flexibility for better access to care. However, most states have returned to previous laws requiring the client be physically in Texas to receive therapy from a Texas licensed therapist.

  • Fortunately, there are often therapists nearby or on many college campuses. We can spend some time before you leave learning how to find a therapist and begin contacting some to have a scheduled appointment before you leave.

If you’d like, after appropriate releases are signed, I’d be happy to collaborate and talk with that therapist to provide continued care for when you leave or during vacations when you are back in Texas.

  • Since my two licenses which allow me to provide mental health and addiction/substance abuse therapy, are from Texas, I can only provide counseling to people within the state lines.
